Hooker Valley

One of the many swing bridges.

The Hooker Valley Track is a beautiful walk, 3 hours return, providing beautiful views of valleys, glaciers and wild flowers.

It is no wonder it is one of the most popular walks in the park. The track leads up the Hooker valley towards Aoraki/Mount Cook. It passes close to the Alpine Memorial and Freda’s Rock before coming to the viewing point of the Mueller Glacier and the first swing bridge.

Cross the Hooker River here and carry on to the second swing bridge. There are many beautiful and varied wildflowers along the way, including Celmisia and the Mount Cook buttercup/kōpukupuku.

The track from the first swing bridge to the second travels between old moraine¹ ridges. After the second bridge the views are amazing.  The vegetation changes to more open tussock vegetation with a boardwalk that weaves it’s way through the wider valley floor. The track ends at the glacier lake, a perfect spot for lunch and to soak up the landscape,  beauty and amazing views of Aoraki/Mount Cook, Hooker Glacier and the Southern Alps/Kā Tiritiri o te Moana.

The return trip is via the same track, however this time your views are down into the valley and across to the Sealy Range.

It is hard not to enjoy this walk as nature’s beauty  surrounds you the entire time.

¹moraine – a mass of rocks and sediment carried down and deposited by a glacier.
